"I have some criticism"

“Constantly seek criticism, a well thought out critique of whatever you are doing is as valuable as gold.”

Growth ends with the decision to avoid or ignore criticism. This is a fact that we sometimes want to forget in order to feel like we are good at something. We can always be better. This isn’t to say that every comment or piece of advice should be tended to. But humility and openness should be present on every set, audition room, and conversation. This is a collaborative art form after all.

After auditioning for a film a project, I was called back. I worked on the sides and shared my perspective with the director and his assistant. The director gave me notes - I implemented them as much as I could. During our first rehearsal for the project he was telling me about the audition process -  how there were several other actors that “just didn’t want to take the note, defended their choices, or just felt bad that they were being corrected.” Sometimes a director doesn’t always speak our language - but it’s apart of our job to translate whatever the note may be and embody it with just as much life as we did with our choice.

Ditto with the business side of things - People that have been in the industry for awhile have a set of experiences that shapes them as artists and creates a specific lens through which they  view the industry - sometimes the advice or criticism may be jaded or cynical but it’s worth the effort to translate and evaluate its usefulness in your life.

Be seen, be open, be vulnerable - be better.
